70813 Rescue Reinforcements

On behalf of the Philippine Lego Users Group (PHLUG), I would like to thank the Lego CEE team for graciously supplying our LUG with Lego Movie sets for review.  Here's my review on one of the big set, the Rescue Reinforcements (70813).

Packaging

First of all I was impressed with the packaging, it has a glossy finish which almost looks like a poster and the box is firm. This set retails at $69.99. The box is smaller than my old set which contains 735 parts considering that this set has 859 parts. I've seen some sites discussing about the reduction of the size of the box by 20%.

The Front box shows the Micro Manager holding Blacktron Fan while the Robo Swat runs after Fabu-Fan and here comes Fire Mech and Flying Barn to the rescue.

The Rear box shows other fights scenes and some feature of the Fire Mech and the Flying Barn.

By simply looking at the box, you can easily tell what's in store for you.

Contents

The box contains 7 pouches (including the five minifigures), 2 fire hose, 3 instructions manuals and a sticker. Manual # 1 contains instruction on how to build the Fire Mech, manual # 2 contains instruction on how to build the Micro Manager and manual # 3 contains instruction on how to build the Flying Barn. What I hate about sets which include stickers is that when the box is moved around, the sticker tends to bend or get crumpled and I encounter this with most sets especially this one. I do hope they put it in a special box like that of the cape and strings.

Actual contents of the box.

Minifigures

The Minifigures are all unique and can only be found in this set.

Blaze Firefighter

This is one of the citizens in the set called Blacktron Fan. I like this minifig because for one it has two expressions, one so happy, the other so gashtly. Second, it has a nice print on his torso, I'm a blacktron fan myself and seeing this print is so cool that I would want to have one for myself.

                                     Blacktron Fan
Meet Blaze Firefighter, the pilot of the Fire Mech. This minifig has no alternative face not like Blacktron Fan and Fabu-Fan. As always, firefighters are serious and this one means business specially when piloting the Fire Mech.

Another one of the citizen in the set is called Fabu-Fun because she is wearing a Fabuland Shirt, also one of the minifig who has two expressions, one so happy, the other so gasthly. Thanks to the print of this minifg, I remember the Fabuland Theme where minifigs are all animals.

Fabu-Fan

Hank Haystack

This is Hank Haystack. This minifig has no alternative face too. But as you can see, he looks so funny, completely the opposite of Blaze Firefighter. He pilots the Flying Barn filled with his farm animals and crops.

Robo SWAT
And lastly meet Robo SWAT, one of the members of the Super Secret Police. What is nice about this minifig is it comes with a vest (normal city police only have printed ones) and a new gun. It looks so cool but sadly it is a villain, not one of the good guys.

Build

Fire Mech

The mech is separated into three pouches namely the head, the arms and hands, and the torso and legs.

3 pouches to complete the Fire Mech, the instruction Manual (#1) and the 2 fire hose.

Pouch 1 contains the parts of the head, when I opened the first pouch, I patiently sorted it out first to see the parts, it was fun though because Emmet was there helping me out. Majority of the parts are small, so after sorting out the pieces, I activated the timer to see how long it would take me to finish the head, I timed myself also for the rest of the build.

When I saw the Brick Separator, I remembered someone and made me laugh (long story). The head has two exhaust pipes, walkie talkie and a megaphone that can be seen at the back. On one side, it has the fire hose, on the other, an empty compartment where you can put other stuff like a fire extinguisher. The cockpit can fit 1 minifig.

The Completely Built Truck Cab

I was curious to know what the minifig can see when it is inside the cab. Good thing there was a door, so when I opened it and focused my lens, this is what I saw. Wow, its like I'm inside my tinted car.

Pouch 2 contains the parts of the arms and hands. This is the second part of the build which excites me more because soon the Mech will be complete.

Pouch 3 contains the parts of the torso and legs. I opened the third pouch and sorted it. I still found no new parts. I activated the timer and started to build the torso and legs.

Now that all the parts are complete, we can now assemble it and see the end product.

This is what it looks when disassembled.

Back side of the Fire Mech
Both sides of the Fire Mech

Fire mech measures over 8” (21cm) high, 3” (8cm) long and 13” (34cm) wide. Fire mech has detachable roof, rotating quad water cannons sprayers, fire hydrant fingers, helmets, gauges, valves, firefighter tanks, toxic tanks, warning signs, hoses on arms and legs, ladder, translucent water element, poseable joints on arms and legs and tools including the hammer, axe, broom, shovel, megaphone and 2 walkie-talkies.

The cabin can fit two minifigures. The arms are fully poseable because of the ball joints used. The fire hydrant hands are poseable as well and can hold up to one minifig. The legs has limited poses compared to the hands. But the good thing is it can support the weight of the whole mech regardless of the pose.

The mech can rotate 360 degrees but is limited due to the hoses attached at the back to the legs, this limits the rotation but this acts as the support and spring. When you rotate the mech to the right, it springs back to its last position. Try removing the tubes that connects the legs and body and see what happens.

Overall, I like the mech, it has the touch of a city fire engine and the looks of a mech. With its size and brute strength, it can go head to head with any Micro Manager. By the way, this set is not the same as the other Lego Movie Set with an Alternate build so I made my own Alternate build. All the parts used came from the mech. I used half of the parts to make this one.

Micro Manager

The mech is separated in two pouches, one for the head and the other for the hands.

Pouch 4 contains the parts of the head, sorting it is easy because it only consists of a few parts.

The head is a very simple build.

Pouch 6 contains the parts of the hands and the legs.

The Completed Micro Manager

Finally, the Micro Manager is finished. The Micro Manager measures over 5” (15cm) high, 4” (12cm) long and 2” (6cm) wide. This is one of the biggest Micro Manager in all the sets of The Lego Movie. It has two large size grip claws, fully poseable, can rotate and use to grab citizens and a third miniature arm holding a laser shooter. Legs are poseable and can rotate a bit. When you open the sides, you can see on each side flick missiles with spares.

It looks like the AT-ST of the star wars but this is a smaller version. Unlike the Micro Manager in Blackbeard's Duel, this is an unmanned unit. This villain is out to catch citizens for Lord Business and shoot anyone on its way. Together with its partner the Robo SWAT, they mean serious business.

The Windmill Helicopter

The Windmill Helicopter is separated in two pouches, one for the cockpit and body and the other for the rest of the helicopter.

Pouch 6 contains the parts of the cockpit and body and as usual sorting is best before building.

Pouch 7 contains the rest of the parts, the chopper blades, animals, etc.

The Completed Windmill Helicopter

Windmill helicopter measures over 5” (14cm) high, 7” (18cm) long and 7” (19cm) wide. This is an interesting build. It's components matches a barn yard. It uses a windmill as its rotor blades. The central core of its power is generated by the pig. The pig walks on the threadmill trying to get the carrot thus creating power for the rotor blades. The navigator is cute, why, because its a chicken, haha. The chicken mans the telescope to guide and give directions to Hank Haystack. The chicken also seeks out the Micro Manager.

There are three weapons, the carrot bomb, apple bomb and flick missiles. The carrot bomb is carefully placed in a tray inside the helicopter. To launch, carefully open the windows, slide the tray then carrots away. The apple bomb is simple, just flip the side basket and aim for the Micro Manager, apples away. Why didn't they put other fruits besides the apple. I wonder. Beneath the small wings, there are two flick missiles, just the thing needed to back up Fire Mech since Micro Manager also has the same thing.

I accidentally dropped the set around 3 feet high, I shouted because I was expecting it to break into several pieces but to my amazement, only the windmill rotors fell apart. The whole body of the helicopter remains intact.

Verdict

I'd say this set is awesome. With 5 unique minifigures, extra animals, the poseable fire mech, wacky windmill barn and the scary micro manager, this set is a must have.

It would be great if lego could provide building instruction for the alternative build of this set but if you are great in doing MOCs, then it is easy to build your own fire engine using the existing parts.

I want to have an army of these fire mechs, that will look awesome in my city sets and those minifigures with unique printed torsos are a great addition to the population of my city.

This ends my review for this set. I do hope it was informative enough to help you decide whether you want this set or not. I will definitely buy this set.

Watch out for my next reviews.
